ChatGPT Guide
ChatGPT is the world's most widely-used AI assistant. Whether you want help writing, researching, coding, or just thinking through a problem, this guide walks you through everything from creating your first account to getting consistently excellent results — all using the free tier.
A prompt is simply what you type in the message box. The quality of what ChatGPT gives you depends almost entirely on how clearly you ask. Here is a simple comparison:
Weak prompt
“Write an email.”
Strong prompt
“Write a polite follow-up email to a client who has not responded in 5 days. Keep it under 100 words. Professional but friendly tone.”
The four ingredients of a strong prompt: role (who is the AI being?), task (what should it do?), context (what details matter?), and format (how should the output look?). You do not need all four every time — but adding even one improves results dramatically.
Most beginners ask one question, get one answer, and stop. The real power of ChatGPT comes from continuing the conversation. After you get a first response:
Paste in a long article, email thread, or meeting notes and ask for a 3-bullet summary.
Emails, reports, cover letters, LinkedIn bios — describe what you need and refine.
Ask it to explain a medical term, a legal clause, or a technical concept 'as if I'm 15'.
Business names, gift ideas, lesson plans, marketing angles — it generates fast, you curate.
Paste your text and ask: 'What are the weaknesses in this paragraph?'
Ask it to teach you a skill step-by-step, then quiz yourself by asking it to test you.
ChatGPT is excellent for writing and conversation, but it is not always the best tool for every task. Here is when to consider alternatives:
Yes. The free tier gives you unlimited access to GPT-4o mini with no credit card required. GPT-4o (the more powerful model) is available on the free plan with daily usage limits. A Plus subscription ($20/month) removes limits and adds file uploads, image generation, and advanced data analysis.
On the free plan you can write and edit text, summarise documents, answer questions, brainstorm ideas, help with code, translate languages, and explain complex topics in plain language. You cannot generate images or run deep data analysis on the free plan — those require Plus.
Be specific. Tell ChatGPT your role ('I am a teacher'), the task ('write a lesson plan'), the audience ('for 12-year-olds'), and the format ('as a bullet list'). The more context you give, the better the output. Always review and ask for revisions — treat it like a conversation.
ChatGPT has a Memory feature (free and Plus) that can remember facts about you across conversations. By default it does not remember anything between sessions. You can enable Memory in Settings or manually tell it important context at the start of a chat.
Yes. ChatGPT works well in most major languages including Hindi, Tamil, Spanish, French, Arabic, Portuguese, and many others. Simply write your prompt in your preferred language.
CertifAI teaches ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and 6 more free tools in a structured programme with verified badges. The first 6 sessions are free.
